Ph.D. Candidate (ABD) in Spanish Linguistics with a minor in Second Language Acquisition at the University of Wisconsin-Madison.
My name is Estefanía Galindo Cattan (formerly Estefanía Galindo-Navarro; I’m currently transitioning to my married name), and I’m originally from Barranquilla, Colombia. I’m currently a Ph.D. Candidate (ABD) in Spanish Linguistics at the University of Wisconsin–Madison (UW–Madison). I joined the Department of Spanish and Portuguese in Fall 2021, where I work as a Spanish teaching assistant for intermediate-level courses and as a project assistant.
I earned my bachelor’s degree in Foreign Languages from the Universidad del Atlántico in Barranquilla in 2018, during which time I also had the opportunity to work as an English teacher for six years. In 2020, I completed a diploma in Pedagogy and Didactics of Teaching Spanish as a Foreign Language at the Caro y Cuervo Institute in Colombia. I further advanced my studies by earning an M.A. in Spanish Linguistics from UW–Madison in 2023. Additionally, I served as a Reach International Ambassador at UW–Madison from 2022 to 2024.
My current research interests focus on the Spanish spoken in the Colombian Caribbean region, explored through phonetic, phonological, and sociolinguistic perspectives. In addition, I have co-authored work on topics such as bilingualism and sociophonetic attitudes among second language (L2) learners of Spanish in the Midwest region of the United States. I have also conducted research on the intonation patterns of bilingual speakers in El Paso, Texas.
